THREE brothers were among the 18 people who died when their Fuso lorry overturned at Kiganda on the Kampala-Mubende road.

They were Stephen Male, a second-year student at Buloba Teachers College, Emmanuel Mutumba and Ponsiano Ssembalirwa. They were sons of Josephat Ssembuya of Busimbi village in Mityana.

By yesterday, at least 30 people were still undergoing treatment in hospitals in Mubende and Mityana following the Saturday accident.

An officer of Mityana Hospital, Francis Masereka, yesterday said some of the injured would be referred to Mulago Hospital.

Meanwhile, a passenger died on the spot and 11 others, including a pregnant woman, were rushed to Kawolo and Mulago hospitals when a commuter taxi rammed into a tractor carrying sugarcane on Friday.

The accident, which also involved a private omnibus, occurred at Lugalambo near Lugazi, on the Kampala-Jinja highway. One of the victims, Hamuza Aligaweesa, said the passengers had complained about the conductor who was urging the driver to rush to Kampala and return to Jinja.

The victims were mainly mourners returning from Mbale after the burial of Irene Wekesa, a former caterer at Lugazi University.

Wekesa died on January 19 when a 40-feet unbolted container fell off a trailer and crushed her car near the university main entrance.

The Mukono district Police commander, James Peter Aurien, identified the dead as Costa Namatovu alias Mama Hadija, a resident of Kazo in Kawempe, while her daughter, Zaituni Mujjumbi of Kyebando, was admitted in Mulago Hospital with injuries.

Seven people were admitted in Mulago Hospital Ward 3B, two were in critical condition. Those in Mulago were Steven Mulyowa, Prosy Nabayunda, Ssalongo Edward Kintu, Herbert Mulembya, Zaituni Mujumbi, Rashid Masaaba and David Wajjuule.

Others are Fred Kirebe, Justine Nakamya, Lillian Ssozi, Beatrice Kiweewa, and Julius Kizire.
Aurien attributed the accident to reckless driving.
