UNIVERSITY education in Uganda is being challenged by labour market demands, the education minister has said.

Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire said universities should equip students with relevant skills that would enable them create employment opportunities.

“The enactment of the University and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2007 will greatly assist in streamlining their operations.

Uganda has over 15 private universities but need to regulated,” said Bitamazire.

Bitamazire, who recently accompanied Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, to St.Lawrence University at Kabaka’s Lake, during his first visit since appointment as its chancellor, said universities should protect the excellence the country had in the past.

“Many African leaders passed through Makerere University and still praise Uganda for better academic quality. We need to sustain the quality of education,” said Bitamazire.

Bukenya said universities should prepare students with practical education to prevent them from being job seekers.

He told students that studying is dynamic and ends the day one dies. He encouraged them to make in-depth research in all spheres if they are to excel.

“I first hesitated taking the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of this university until I proved the quality of education of St. Lawrence schools,” Bukenya said.
