SEKONDI - Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will not attend Friday’s African Footballer of the Year ceremony in Lome, Togo, coach Claude LeRoy said.

SEKONDI - Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will not attend Friday’s African Footballer of the Year ceremony in Lome, Togo, coach Claude LeRoy said.
The Chelsea player has been shortlisted with team mate Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast, Mali midfielder Mahamadou Diarra and striker Frederic Kanoute and Arsenal’s Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor.
“He certainly is not going to go there,†LeRoy told French radio RTL.
“All these officials with ties and medals on their suit jackets, they can wait for him. He’s not going.â€
Ghana play their African Nations Cup quarter-final against Nigeria in Accra on Sunday.
Togo’s Kodzo Samlan, a press officer with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said: “The players will leave Accra in a plane, it’s just a 15-minute flight.â€
“The ceremony will be over by 9pm and two hours later they’ll be back in Accra.â€
