Joseph Kony will have to be pushed

EDITOR—I take my cue from John Nagenda’s article of February 8 that “minions announced the LRA’s demand for more than a third of all Government and army posts for themselves and other Northerners and Northeasterners”.

These days any serious criticism of Kony is likely to draw accusations of jeopardising the peace process. It is also said that for Kony to stop his war, he must not be made to feel that he was defeated, but that he and the government reached a peace settlement.

I respect those who have persevered with the peace talks or even risked their lives for establishing communication with Kony. The talks have at least assured some of Kony’s fighters that they can surrender and be allowed to live in peace. I maintain that Kony himself will never abandon his warring methods either peacefully or by negotiation.

He will have to be defeated! The approach should be for the international community to exert pressure. After the demise of Vincent Otti and others on Kony’s negotiation team, the present group of negotiators is a sham.
