BUSINESS came to a standstill on Cathedral Avenue in Mbale town when a mob attacked Asian traders on Monday. The mob, which was pelting stones at shops belonging to Asians, was avenging the death of Asad Mudasi, who was shot by a security guard at Janan Supermarket owned by an Asian.

The crime chief, Lawrence Ebwosu, identified the guard as James Okiror attached to the Protection Security Services.

Witnesses said Okiror killed Mudasi from the entrance of the supermarket he was guarding.

The angry crowd started beating Okiror but he took cover in the shop.

Asians locked themselves in their shops and the Anti-Riot Police was deployed to disperse the irate crowd.

Ebwosu said Okiror was arrested as the Police was investigating the matter.

Lookman Masaba, a relative of the deceased, condemned the reaction of the crowd, saying people wanted to take advantage of Mudasi’s death to loot shops belonging to Asian traders.
