DOUBLE Olympic medallist Leo Rwabwogo will be honoured with a legendary award at the uganda telecom-USPA Sports Personality of the Year Gala this Saturday.

The USPA executive analysed the shortlist over the weekend and unanimously zeroed on the 59-year-old Rwabwogo, the only Ugandan to have won two Olympic medals.

The maiden USPA legendary award was given posthumously to golfer Sadi Onito — a 12-time winner of local golf’s top competition— the Uganda Open.
Bombers’ flyweight Rwabwogo punched his way into the headlines at the 1968 Mexico Olympics by winning bronze.

Rwabwgo’s feat came just before compatriot Eridad Mukwanga got a silver.
Rwabwogo further engraved his name into the sports annals at the next quadrennial games in Munich with a silver medal.

“I’m very happy. It’s morale boosting to know that there are still people out there who recognise what we did for this nation,” Rwabwogo said from his Mbagane village in Kabarole district.

“It’s an honour for such a legend to grace the gala. It’s important to recognise our legends when they are still alive,” USPA president Mazune commented.
