KAMPALA
The president of SOS Children’s Villages, Helmut Kutin, is to arrive in Uganda today. He will inspect the organisation’s projects in various parts of the country. According to a statement, Kutin will visit Pece division in Gulu, where he will break ground for a new SOS children’s village. The village is expected to house 150 children and youth. SOS children’s villages in Uganda currently care for over 1,500 children in Kakiri, Entebbe and Gulu. Kutin has worked for the organization since 1968 and was appointed president in 1985.

Lyomoki case on
KAMPALA
Emmanuel Bangirana, a trade unionist, has been charged with defaming Workers MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki. Bagirana, who is also the workers representative to the African Peer Review Commission, allegedly committed the offence last year, when he wrote and circulated a letter claiming Lyomoki was a misfit, who had sought refuge in the NRM. The letter, addressed to the secretary general of the NRM, was intended to destroy Lyomoki’s reputation. Bangirana denied the charges before Magistrate Agatonica Mbabazi of Mwanga II Court. He was granted a bond of sh1m and his two sureties were bonded the same amount.

Man held over forgery
KAMPALA
The City Council Magistrate’s Court has remanded a businessman to Luzira Prison for allegedly obtaining sh20m by false pretence. Prosecution said Anthony Kibuuka, 57, a resident of Kabasanda-Kulumba zone in Mpigi, forged a cheque of Housing Finance Company worth sh20m and presented it for payment. Kibuuka claimed the cheque had been issued by RUPA Limited. However, according to prosecutor Patricia Cingtho, the money was later discovered to belong to the Uganda Catholic Secretariat. Magistrate Esther Nambayo adjourned the hearing to April 22.
