US-BASED Ismael Muwendo lost 7-8 as two Ugandan boxers fell on day one of the Africa Olympic qualifiers in Windhoek, Namibia. UABF president Roger Ddungu, who accompanied the fighters and spoke to The New Vision on phone, said feather-weight Muwendo, put up a hard fight and lost a very close fight last evening.

Flyweight Edward Kakembo had earlier fallen to experienced Kenyan Bernard Ngungu 12-7.

Bombers’ Muzei Aldina (bantamweight) and Meddie Lubega (light welterweight) were due to face Nigerian and Gabon opponents respectively later in the day. The final 30 of Africa’s quota of 60 boxers will be selected in Namibia.

None of the Ugandan boxers qualified for the Olympics at the World Championship in Chicago last year. Uganda did not send a team for Africa’s first qualifier in Algiers.

Uganda, that has a rich Olympic boxing tradition having won three silver and a bronze medal since 1968, look set to miss out on the Beijing games.
