MAURITIUS Open champion and All Africa Games bronze medallist, Edwin Ekiring fell to top seed, Chetan Anand of India in the semi-finals of the Kenya International Badminton championships at the Premier Club in Nairobi yesterday.

The Ugandan champion was beaten 21-16 21-19 in the men’s singles to end his dreams of stopping the 65th ranked player.

Ekiring is ranked 104 and was seeded fourth in the tournament that attracted players from 11 countries in the world.

“I should have myself to blame for losing. I led 15-10 and 18-15 in the second set before losing control of the game to allow my bogey opponent clinch the set and the game,” Ekiring said after the match.

Anand, who went ahead to clinch the title after beating Antonio Crespo of Spain 21/14, 21/7, praised Ekiring. He said the Ugandan gave him a run for his money but found it very easy in the final.

Another Ugandan, Wilson Tukure qualified for the quarter-finals before losing to Crespo 6-21 9-21.
Uganda’s duo of Mega Nankabirwa and Jovia Kyomuhendo failed to make it for the quarters after falling in the third round to Nigerian and Spanish opponents respectively.
