MICHAEL Kariuki sunk a decisive point to hand Kampala International University (KIU) an edge over Gulu University in a thrilling final at the MTN Inter-University basketball championship on Sunday.

The two teams were tied 43 points up with 30 seconds to go before Kariuki capitalised on the three-pointer.

Hosts Gulu looked on course to capture the title but threw away a 26-point lead at Kaunda grounds.

Gulu made an explosive start in the game with Denis Akena, who notched three four-pointers – top-scoring with 27 points – as the hosts cruised to a 41-25 point lead by the third quarter.

But national league stars Kariuki (23) and Dhol Alewu (12) closed the gap — pushing the event to the wire before Kariuki slammed the decisive winner.

The women title also went to KIU Western Campus, who beat both Gulu and their Kampala counterparts, to the honour.

The feat earned Akena an MVP award in the men's’ category while Jackie Natokyo who dictated the pace for KIU women carried the laurel in the ladies category in the two-day championship watched by mammoth crowds.
