Basketball could benefit from Tashobya

AMBROSE Tashobya is quite the smashing chap. At 6ft2 or something, permanently concocting the perfect style of dress code, and pushing a Mercedes for good measure, domestic basketball governing body FUBA could not find a better president if they tried.

AMBROSE Tashobya is quite the smashing chap. At 6ft2 or something, permanently concocting the perfect style of dress code, and pushing a Mercedes for good measure, domestic basketball governing body FUBA could not find a better president if they tried.
Moreover his insight on local basketball, accrued from years as a player and now as coach of the eye-catching Kyambogo Warriors, would not permit such a cynical enterprise. In fact on his account alone, Ugandan basketball can kick back and relax — its best days are here.
Granted the federation’s overall performance in 2007 was undermined by a few moments of scandalous inconsistence but Tashobya had just come in, needing more time to implement his good intentions — for that is all he has — towards local basketball.
The 2008 season marks Tashobya’s second year at the helm which should see justice done to that heaven-blessed manner of his.
The immediate task of drafting a permanent constitution or rather outlawing the existent obstinacy that would guarantee its violation is halfway through completion.
Already. all league clubs have been briefed on the dangers of breaking the sport governing laws in future.
It’s the kind of stringency that is bound to put a few clubs in trouble, but Tashobya has to do what he has to do as head of FUBA.
Other to-do plans include introducing the 24seconds clock rule, carrying out overdue renovations at Lugogo indoor stadium and transforming games into an all-round fun experience for the spectator.
All promises yet but with the sport barely tapping into the potential worthy of a nationwide hobby after thirteenth years of running a league, sweeping improvements are belated.
Mercifully, rather than not, Ugandan basketball has a lot of catching up to do on African greats like Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Senegal but as any efforts will start at the top, Tashobya’s visionary could not have been better rewarded.
Of course, many will not believe until they see — another reason for Tashobya to deliver on his promises.
But one thing that skeptics and supporters have in agreement is the desire to witness the fulfilment of the hopes riding on the supremo’s young shoulders.
The new season carries the promise of a basketball league on the mend, led by that smashing personality Tashobya.
