JUST when you thought Ugandan girls would take last Saturday’s Miss MUBS 2008 contest as a launching pad to the bigger Miss Uganda contest, they were a no show!

Out of the 10 contestants who graced the Club Beer, New Vision and Ange Noir-sponsored pageant at Kati Kati grounds, only four were Ugandans and the rest Kenyans. The odds were obviously not in favour of the Ugandan girls.

Mary Kibere, 22, was the eventual winner, and deservingly so. For one, she knew a thing or two about the catwalk and was eloquent when answering questions. And at one point, she reduced the emcee, Sanyu FM’s Irish Kyebandula, to a stutterer during question time.

Asked to describe the brown colour in her creative outfit, she said: “I love colour brown because I’m a dirty girl...” This, with too much eye rolling and sultry cooing, ‘dirrrrty girl’ had sexual innuendo, which caused Irish to choke and the adrenaline driven crowd cheer! Asked what she liked in a man, “functionality” she replied, driving the crowd into spasms of laughter.

Second runner-up, Juliet Nanyondo, elicited more cheers from the small crowd; she would have won the crown had she got her questions right. To the tune of cheers, she oft put too much energy into the catwalk; it was hard to draw a line between the Kiganda traditional dance, Nankasa and her walk. She walked off with a 21 inch television.

The first runner-up, Winnie Ayao, was rumoured to have taken crash driving lessons prior to the contest for she knew the prize car; a Toyota Corsa was hers. Backstage, she queried the credentials of the judges; Cineplex’s Natasha Epenu and journalist Miles Rwamiti. Rumours abound about how she had been hand-picked by one of the sponsors to assume the throne. She won a fridge.

Self-styled dance hall queen Bella showed she is not fully detached from the former Shadow Angels days for she turned up semi-nude! Desire Luzinda too showed more body than voice. Sweet Kid was top notch, although the crowd kept asking for Master Blaster. The emcee, Irish, improvised and did a rendition of the song Embooko to calm the crowd.

We finally have a beauty queen driving a car bought straight from the bond.

More importantly, she is in possession of the car log book.
