A 78-kilometre road connecting the oil wells in western Uganda to the soon-to-be completed Hoima-Busunju Road is in the offing.

Works minister John Nasasira said the road, to ease the transportation of refined oil, would run from Hoima to Kaiso-Tonya near the shores of Lake Albert.

“It will be a high standard road,” Nasasira said last week while inspecting the road network and projects for Tullow Oil, an oil exploration firm.

Nasasira noted that the construction had to be fast so that Tullow’s activities are not slowed down.

According to Nasasira, the work would involve erecting a bridge over River Wambabya, blasting rocks and cutting the escarpment in some areas.

However, Nasasira did not disclose how much the road would cost but the ministry will soon call for bids from companies interested in its construction.

Nasasira’s disclosure followed a meeting with Tullow’s development manager, John Morley, at Tonya in Hoima district last week.

The company has identified big oil wells at Kaiso and Tonya. It will soon embark on offshore exploration in Lake Albert. Production is expected to kick off next year.

Morley said the road should be able to withstand hundreds of tons of equipment and oil.

The existing roads will be repaired to enable Tullow to transport equipment to the camps. Nasasira hailed Tullow for its projects which he said would improve the locals’ economic status.

The company built a school, maternity clinic and a life-jacket factory in the area.
