Medics working in government hospitals and health centres have been warned against dodging work.

The outgoing Jinja district director of Health Services, Dr. David Kitimbo, said absenteeism had encouraged negligence in health centres.

Kitimbo was speaking to district health workers at Tourist Bay Hotel Jinja on Friday during a function where he handed over to his successor, Dr. Sarah Byakika.

“Most medical workers do not want to work in rural areas while others drink a lot of alcohol which makes them unable to work. Those who work, neglect patients over minor issues,” Kitimbo said.

He advised the medics to maintain good working relationships with patients and adopt result-oriented management that will help them set targets and monitor their performance.

“You should go for further studies. The more you advance in your career, the better your pension and gratuity.”

Byakika advised medical workers to integrate community demands with their work and maintain good working relationships.

Dr. Eddie Mukooyo of the Ministry of Health said Jinja was the best performing district in the health sector: “Jinja is among the 43 districts that will get computers and Internet services. They will also launch a website where people can access health information about the district.”
