LANGO will soon become an education hub, with four private universities expected to be operational soon. The universities are All Saints Lango, Lira Integrated, Won Nyaci Royal and Lira, which will be a branch of Gulu University.

Royal will enroll students of agriculture, Lira will take science and technology learners, while All Saints will be for natural and physical sciences. Lira Integrated University is a brainchild of Beatrice Byaruhanga, the director of the Integrated School.

She recently emerged the best presenter at a women’s development conference in the UK, prompting the World Bank to help upgrade her school to a university.

Royal University was conceived last year following a conference of Langi in the UK, while All Saints will be funded by the Diocese of Lango.

The chancellor of All Saints and Lango Diocese bishop, John Charles Odur Kami, told journalists at St. Augustine Community Centre in Lira on Tuesday that the university would begin in September.

He expects the university, which will operate from the community centre before moving to Boroboro Road, to have 800 pioneer students.

“The idea of establishing the university was conceived in 1963 but it collapsed with the abrupt change of government in 1971,” said Odur, who was accompanied by other university officials and the Lira LC5 chairman, Franco Ojur.

“We have come in full swing to provide excellent education to the people of Lango and beyond.”

Odur said All Saints university would recruit 19 full-time teaching staff in May.
Candidates should be Masters and PhD holders, he added. Twenty support staff will also be recruited.

He introduced Prof. Matthew Okai, who will be vice-chancellor, his deputy, Dr. Absolom Kenneth Oteng and George Washington Buwa, the university secretary.

Ojur said the five districts in the region had contributed sh10m towards the university.
