A GROUP of internally displaced persons of Palaro camp in Lagot-Tek village stormed a farm belonging to John Onguti, a businessman in Gulu town.

Five huts were set ablaze, 420 head of cattle were raided and one of the caretakers, Simon Odwong, was stabbed in the stomach by the mob that was armed with spears, arrows, bows, and clubs.

The district Police commander, Yasin Ndimwibo, on Monday said the group accused Onguti of grazing animals on a disputed piece of land.

“We recovered 315 head of cattle from Owalo village. People are taking the law in their hands. If it requires arresting the whole villages, I shall do so because they are sabotaging the Government’s campaign for people to resettle in their homes.”

He appealed to local, religious and opinion leaders to work with the Police to curb the increasing cases of land disputes among people returning to their villages.

Onguti said he bought the cattle from Soroti to restock his farm because of the prevailing peace in the north.

“Some of the cows were killed by the mob. This land belongs to my family. We were born here although some elders say that we must leave,” Onguti told The New Vision.
