WOMEN have been cautioned against wastefulness and investing money borrowed from microfinance institutions in non-productive ventures.

“Invest in income-generating projects and learn to save. Do not divert the money but use it for the intended work,” said Kasirivu Atwooki, the state minister for lands.

He urged residents to embrace handwork so as to benefit from the Prosperity-for-all (Bonna Bagaggawale) programme.

The minister made the remarks last week while presiding over the Women’s Day celebrations for Mayuge district at Lugolole Primary School in Baitambogwe sub-county

Kasirivu, who was accompanied by state minister for gender and district Woman MP Rukia Nakadama, also advised residents to acquire titles for their land for verification of ownership and as security to access loans.

The Government would provide land titles to citizens for free, he stated, adding that a pilot scheme had begun from Bulowooza parish in Iganga district, where over 200 residents will soon get the titles.

“Plans are also underway, with funding from the World Bank, to secure titles for government-owned land,” Kasirivu said. He gave 21 hybrid goats to women’s groups in seven sub-counties.

The groups are part of the district women’s council development initiatives. The minister donated sh100,000 to the council.

Nakadama urged men to always support projects nitiated by their wives if they are geared at alleviating poverty in the family.

According to the resident district commissioner, John Fisher Kasenge, Mayuge could have developed faster but lack of adequate electricity and safe water were its set backs. Over 90% of the district, he said, did not have piped water.

“In its land fund programme, the Government should give priority to Mayuge because we have so many landless people. South Busoga forest reserve alone has 15,000 of them,” Kasenge said.

In attendance were the LC5 chairman, Bakali Ikoba Tigawalana, his vice Peter Tasibula Nkwanga, chairperson of the women’s council Jessica Muzaale and the chief administrative officer, Solomon Ssonko.
