THE continental university sports governing body FASU has given Makerere the green light to host the 5th All Africa University Games after inspecting its facilities.

President Yoweri Museveni will open the games at Mandela stadium, Namboole on July 8.

FASU president Hassan Chikh and general secretary Steven Thomas cleared the facilities at Makerere, the main host venue.

FASU also inspected facilities at Uganda Christian University Mukono, Namboole and Nakivubo, the games co-hosts.

But the continental body recommended that the floor of Lugogo Indoor Stadium be improved before it can be cleared to host the games.

The games are expected to attract over 4,000 athletes from across the continent

The athletes will compete in 17 different disciplines including athletics, basketball, soccer, handball, rugby, swimming, tennis and wood ball.

The games’ local organising committee chairman John Ekudu said that the President had confirmed his presence at the two-week games that have so far attracted 24 countries.

Ekudu and his team briefed the press at the weekend about preparations.

The official said handball is likely to be staged at the newly laid hockey astro turf at Lugogo but negotiations between the organising committee and Uganda Hockey Association are still going on.

The organising committee drew a sh1.6b budget for the games but could not say how much they have so far collected.
