UGANDAN track stars at the weekend showed they are ready to take on international competition as the build-up to the Olympics intensifies in Europe. Last weekend’s results were crowned with an 800m senior national record and 3000m junior new time.

Abraham Chepkirwok posted 1:44.53 to win the Berlin Golden League leg, enroute to setting a national record over the 800m.

He had beaten Wilfred Bungei earlier in the season and this time left World Champion Alfred Kirwa of Kenya and South Africa’s Mbulaeni Mulaudzi chasing as he posted the season’s third best time.

World 5000m bronze medallist Moses Kipsiro, taking part in only his second track event, also ran below 13 minutes over the distance, after he posted a time of 12:54.70, the season’s third best time, and his fourth best in the career.

Benjamin Kiplagat, who rewrote the national 3000m steeplechase record to 8:14.29, is looking ahead to winning a medal at the World Junior championship as a spring-board to the Beijing Olympic Games.

However, it is Doreen Chesang who crowned the weekend by setting a new national junior record.

In her first race after being signed on by Pace Sports Management, Chesang clocked a 9.13.70 minutes to better the former record that was held by Dorcus Inzikuru of 9:15.66. Inzikuru ran the time in Poland in 1999.
