THE Police and the Rapid Response Unit have arrested eight people, including local council leaders, over the theft of cattle in Bbaale and Galiraya sub-counties, Kayunga district.

The district Police commander, John Cohen Arinaitwe, identified the suspects as Robert Ssemakula, the LC1 chairman of Katuugo village in Bbaale sub-county, and his executive members - Joseph Nsamba, John Kaliisa and Badru Kigayaza.

Others are Fred Ssenyonga, David Kadugala, Geoffrey Mwesigwa and God Baguma.

The Police recovered five head of cattle, which belonged to the Kampala district chairman of the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association, Hajji Moses Katongole.

“Ssenyonga, Baguma, Kadugala and Mwesigwa were trying to hire a boat to transport the cattle across River Nile to Kamuli district but we intercepted them on Friday,” Arinaitwe said.

He added that the local council leaders had given the four suspects a permit to transport the cattle, which was stolen from Katongole’s farm.

The Police chief said the suspects would be taken to court and be charged with theft.

Over 150 head of cattle had been stolen from Bbaale, Kayonza and Galiraya sub-counties recently.
