STANDARD Chartered (StanChart) Bank has opened a branch in Kikuubo.

The bank has also opened up a centre for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to take banking services closer to SME customers in downtown Kampala.

“The move to Kikuubo is a confirmation of our commitment to the development of SMEs,” the board chairman, James Mulwana, said at the opening.

Mulwana said the number of SMEs in Africa had increased rapidly.

“We believe SMEs account for between 30% and 60% of African Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and they will be the main driver of sustainable economic growth in Africa over the next 10 years.”

He said in Uganda, SMEs remain the engine of the economy, contributing to over 75% of the GDP.

The bank’s chief executive, Lamin Manjang, said they are proud to be part of the great evolution of the SME sector in Uganda and Africa.

He said they have an enhanced SME business model.
