I have a new respect for the Karimojong!

Editor—As I was reading some Sunday vision newspapers, I came across an article about karamoja. I was very surprised and I now admire the karimojong culture. For a long time I have only read and heard negative stories about the Karimojong.

It is interesting that these people have keenly protected their culture. Can you imagine that HIV/AIDS prevalence among these people between the ages of 19-49 who are assumed to be most sexually active is less than 1 per cent as compared to the national figure of 6.4per cent and 8 per cent in central and northern Uganda!

this has been achieved because the Karimojong value sex and marriage so much that boys and girls below 18 years do not marry or engage in sex before marriage! It is taboo.

Men marry only one wife. This is a big lesson to the rest of Uganda to begin valuing their cultures if we are to fight AIDS effectively in our country.
