EDITOR—Recently, someone sought information on the number of maternity leave days a nursing mother is entitled to. The employer of the anonymous writer’s sister is wrong.

The number of maternity days a nursing mother is entitled to is 60 working days. This means public holidays and weekends are excluded. It is clearly spelt out in the Employment Act: Section 56; Clause 1: “A female employee shall, as a consequence of pregnancy have the right to a period of 60 working days leave from work...”

Please advise your sister to refer her boss to the Employment Act if the boss is in doubt. In case of dispute, ask her to refer to the Ministry of Labour Office.
