THE Police Marine Unit at Luzira Port in Kampala recently arrested two people over theft of cattle.

John Atupa and Fred Masanga Muwanga were arrested as they transported six Friesian cows on a boat across the lake to an unknown destination.

The Port Bell Police chief, Winnie Gashumba, said the cattle was stolen from Mawotto village in Mukono.

She said Muwanga dived into the water when he saw a Police patrol boat approach them.

“We became suspicious and chased him. When he reached the shore, we arrested him and he led us to his accomplice,” she said.

The Police said the stolen cattle are taken to an unknown island where they are grazed, awaiting resale during the festive Christmas season.

“We also believe they have stolen more cattle, pigs and goats, which are hidden on islands,” Gashumba said.

The Police had to shield the suspects from a mob that wanted to lynch them.
“Investigations are still going on. If the suspects are found guilty, they will be charged,” Gashumba added.
