HOUSING state minister Michael Werikhe has backed a stand by the tenants of the Buganda Road flats that the houses should be sold to them.

He clarified that the flats were no longer under his jurisdiction. “The policy on pool houses demands that sitting tenants should be given the first priority to buy the flats,” he said on Wednesday.

The minister told the MPs probing the eviction of the tenants that the flats, which are currently managed by the National Housing & Construction Corporation (NH&CC), were under the Ministry of Finance.

“The issue of the Buganda Road flats should be directed to the finance minister, Ezra Suruma.” In June, over 96 tenants petitioned Parliament to stop NH&CC from evicting them.

The corporation wants to redevelop the plot and relocate the tenants to Namungona.
