She could be young, but she is brilliant enough to memorise all her orders and serve customers diligently. Rianna Richardson, 8, is Kampala’s youngest waitress. Her parents are Richardson Rennie and Sheila Agonzibwa of Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb.
Rianna is a pupil at Ambrosollin International School, Luthuli Avenue. She has worked as a waitress for the past one year at Clement Hill Hotel. She mastered the art of serving customers and attends to them in time. Nicholas Kajoba visited the hotel and talked to her
How old are you and which school do you go to?
I am eight years old and I am in year three of Ambrosollin International School.
Briefly tell us how you spend your day?
I wake up 5:30am, have a bath, go for breakfast and then go to school.
Our classes end at 3:00pm and then I go straight to my workplace where I work up to 6:00pm. After that I go back home, read my books and retire in my bed.
Isn’t it tiresome for you as a child to work and read all those hours?
I do not think so. It is fun and I enjoy serving people in our family restaurant. But I spare some time for playing with my friends at school and some weekends at home.
What is it like working in a hotel? Aren’t you scared of serving many people?
I am used to I serving all people including children. For the children, I move them around and guide them to choose the best. For the adults, immediately they sit, I greet them and ask for their orders.
If there are many orders, don’t you forget some of them along the way?
I memorise those orders one by one. I first serve them with drinks and then I get their orders of food. I do not mix the food and drinks.
Do you get tips?
I do get tips. Some customers give me sh2,000 or sh3,000 depending on how they liked my services.
And when did you develop the idea of becoming a waitress?
I got an idea from my mother Agonzibwa. I used to see her directing people on how to serve customers in the hotel so I thought may be I could also do it.
Hobbies?
I love playing football, serving people and watching cartoons like Tarzan and Kim.
Any special persons you admire?
I admire football stars like Rooney, Christiano Ronaldo, Ronadinho and my mother of course.
