WOMEN in the district are failing to space their children due to lack of family planning services. The area MP, Evelyn Chelangat, said the fertility rate for women in Bukwo was eight children per woman while the national average was 6.9. Chelangat was speaking during a meeting organised by the Population Secretariat and Reproductive Health Uganda to monitor the progress of family planning interventions.
She said having many children was contributing to high numbers of women dying in childbirth.“We have only one health centre. Some women deliver on the way to hospitals while others die before they get there.†Information from WHO shows that maternal deaths can be reduced by about 20% with the use of family planning.
The vice chairperson of the parliamentary committee on social services, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, called for special attention to Bukwo in the area of family planning.
Have check-ups traders told
Issa Sekitto, the Kampala Traders Association spokesman, has urged traders to have regular check-ups to avoid suffering from otherwise preventable conditions. He was explaining a proposed insurance scheme by African Air Rescue (AAR) recently.
At sh295,000, the AAR corporate cover caters for 10 people for a year. Dr. Herbert Turyagyenda said AAR members could get treatment in 93 hospitals and clinics as well as outpatient treatment centres all over East Africa.
