THE Uganda People’s Defence Forces has the biggest Savings and Credit Co-operative Organisation (SACCO) in the country with about sh6b in savings, the Chief of Defence Forces has said.

Gen. Aronda Nyakairima said the SACCO, Wazalendo, would start giving loans to members by this year’s end.

“The army leadership is embarking on a drive to ensure financial discipline among officers and men.

“The saving culture in our forces has improved and that is why we have sh6b in a short time.”

Aronda was on Saturday addressing the Uganda National Guild Presidents’ Council at Makerere University.

He observed that some youth were forging Makerere University papers to join the army.

He also announced that 300 graduates were undergoing training as cadet officers, while 97 others were being trained as ordinary soldiers.

He invited graduates to join the army, saying in the ongoing professionalisation of the armed forces, there was space for skilled people to serve the country.

Aronda denied allegations that top army officers were involved in grabbing land.

“If the Police does not arrest them, I will personally arrest any officer who grabs private property. We have zero tolerance to indiscipline,” he said.

The youth, Aronda said, should support the Land (Amendment) Bill, which he said seeks to protect both tenants and landlords.

He also noted that the army would support whoever wins the 2011 presidential elections.
