KAMPALA City Council has suspended several top division town clerks after reports of corruption persistently came out of the divisions.

In Makindye division, the vice-chairman Siraje Lubwama is behind bars over allegations that he was involved in misusing sh71m intended for Local Government Development Programmes (LGDP). In Kawempe, a recently-released auditor general’s report said over sh2b has not been accounted for in the last two years.

In Nakawa division, gross abuse of LGDP funds was reported. Two years ago, the city town clerk James Ssegane was interdicted over alleged abuse of funds.

The city community is the largest loser in every sense. To make matters worse, the abuse of public funds came at a time when most of the city infrastructure is in a shambles. Garbage heaps are growing and, as the rainy season sets in, a cholera outbreak is feared. City roads are in a sorry state.

The authorities must leave no stone unturned if abuse of funds is to be wiped out in the city and other local governments. Those found to have dipped their fingers in public coffers must pay.
