SENIOR One students of St Mary Reparatrix Girls SS Bugonga in Entebbe are the Peace torchbearers in their school, after winning a quiz organised at their school recently.

The students who were celebrating their Peace day answered questions ranging from what causes strikes in schools to solutions to conflicts.
The play acted by S3 students showed that poor communication between children and their parents causes conflict in schools.

Under the day’s theme: Student leaders are the major cause of strikes in schools, Catherine Kembabazi of S1 urged prefects to use the power given to them by the administrators wisely.

“Prefects at times misuse their power by giving harsh punishments! Imagine being made to scrub the trenches around the school because of talking in your mother tongue!” she exclaimed.

Julie Namatovu, S2, suggested light punishment like picking rubbish around the compound should be given instead.

A prefect, Julia Katamba, S5, insisted administration gave them authority to deal with students who misbehave. Their chief judge Teddy Maria Kizza, S5, explained she always talks to the prefects about the need to be fair while performing their duties.

The chief guest Reverend Father Tom Mayawu from Kisubi Parish reminded the students that peace is not just about the absence of violence. “You need to be pro-active not reactive in your actions. You must have internal peace within your heart to be in a peaceful environment,” he said.

Fr Mayawu who has stayed in the war zones in northern Uganda for long, urged students to learn tolerance to avoid more conflicts in the country.
