POLICE has blamed the rampant carnage on the Kampala-Jinja highway on the local community and indisciplined motorists using the road.

Lugazi Police chief Patrick Onyango pointed the blame while speaking at the annual Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Road Safety Campaign in Lugazi on Saturday.

Onyango said that the people living along the road cut away road signs for sale to scrap dealers and welders.

“The public is stealing road signs. It makes our work very difficult. I warn scrap dealers who buy them (the posts) to be careful. We are intensifying our surveillance. Report anyone you see removing the posts to police,” Onyango, who was backed by Lugazi Mayor Deo Tumwesigye, said.

The road safety campaign is in memory of Francis Batte Jnr, Simon Peter Ekarot, Kenneth Matovu and Leo Kabunga — USPA executive members who died in a horrific accident near the town in 2001. The campaign included a march and painting of a zebra crossing in Lugazi town.

This year’s USPA event was sponsored by uganda telecom, National Insurance Corporation, City Tyres and National Council of Sports.

USPA is due to hold a memorial service for the deceased alongside other members who have passed on at Christ The King Church in Kampala on Thursday.
