THE Uganda Revenue Authority has impounded a truck that was allegedly carrying smuggled bitenge clothes from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The URA southwestern regional manager, Julius Rubagumya, on Wednesday said they seized the truck, registration number UAH 182R, during the night at Kikorongo on the Kasese-Bwera road after a tip-off.

He noted that the authority had lost over sh70m in taxes in the region due to smuggling.

“The truck had five sets of clothes for which the traders had paid sh2m at Mpondwe customs border post but when they crossed the border, they loaded (onto the truck) other textiles that they had hidden,” Rubagumya explained.

He added that they also impounded 150 motorcycles with forged registration plates and other unregistered ones from Isingiro, Ibanda and Bundibugyo districts as well as in Bunyaruguru in Bushenyi district.

“Unregistered motorcycles are becoming a security threat in the region,” said the southwestern tax chief.

The revenue authority, stated Rubagumya, would make paying taxes easy and enjoyable for those who observe the law but make life extremely hard and expensive for those who try to evade taxes.
