THE construction of a sh105m general ward at Nagongera Health Centre Four in Tororo district has failed to take off, three months after the ground-breaking ceremony.

The district chairperson, Emmanuel Osuna and other officials commissioned the construction work in July.

Abacha Construction Company, a local firm in Tororo town, won the contract.

Building materials have not been delivered to the site and an official of Abacha Company who preferred not to be named said senior district officials had frustrated their efforts to begin work.

“We have frequented the district to get some money that could enable us begin but all in vain,” he said.

During the Independence Day celebrations in Tororo, the resident district commissioner, Mpimbaza Hashaka, took up the issue with the district authorities, wondering why the project had not taken off when the Government had released the funds under the primary healthcare project.

Though the deputy chief administrative officer, Francis Orono, said work would begin soon, the construction firm official said they believed their work would be difficult, since they had been subjected to harsh treatment before.

“At one time, officials at the district insisted that we should get a bank guarantee, which called for a premium and we ended up working at a loss,” said the official.

Hashaka said he would follow up the issue till the project takes off.
