THE top two Uganda football leagues will be restructured at the end of this season to create a new Big League, the game’s governing body FUFA announced yesterday.
The top first division sides from each of the five regions will advance to the Super League, with the runner-up and third ranked sides left to form a national first division league —The Big League— next year.
They will be joined by the five Super League clubs that will be relegated this season.
First division sides until this year competed only at regional level, with many of them failing to cope whenever they climbed up to the national Super League.
FUFA Competitions Committee secretary Moses Magogo confirmed that qualification to the Super League through the regional mini leagues has ended. Promotions will now be through the national first division league.
“The top performers in this league will be promoted to the 2010/2011 Uganda Super League as we continue reorganising,†Magogo said as he unveiled the blueprint of the first division league.
Magogo says this will help raise the standard of football outside the Super League.
Magogo informed the weekly press conference at FUFA House in Mengo that a select committee will be created next week to study the Cranes failed campaign and report back to the federation in one month.
The committee will also discuss what assignment to hand Cranes coach Robert Williamson. Magogo refuted claims that the Scot had been given a two-match contract that had ended.
Williamson joined the Cranes following the departure of former national coach Laszlo Csaba in the course of the campaign. “As far as I am concerned, he is still the national coach and that is why he is still around. We employed him because we felt that he was the best and we have the money to pay him,†said Magogo
Magogo, who thanked government, the fans and sponsors for supporting the team during the qualifiers, said that they will build on the positive aspects they have gained.
