Ndejje University has been granted a charter, becoming the fourth private university whose qualifications are now at par with those of public universities.

A charter is an official license which the Government gives to a university to recognise that the institution is capable of conducting internationally identifiable courses of study and award recognised degrees, diplomas and certificates. It follows the guidelines set by the National Council for Higher Education.

The other chartered private universities are Nkumba, Uganda Christian University and the Uganda Martyrs’ University, Nkozi.

The Ndejje vice-chancellor, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Michael Ssenyimba, said the charter was in recognition of potential and a measure of autonomy.

“It is not a measure of achievement, but it gives a much higher profile to the institution and creates confidence to outsiders,” Ssenyimba said.

Ndejje University is the pioneer private university in Uganda. It was established in 1992 as a community-oriented and Christian centre for higher learning.
