THE police in Sembabule district have destroyed a two-and-half acre garden of marijuana. The Police also arrested a 55-yearold man, the owner of the garden.

The acting district police commander, David Obella, said the garden was located in the middle of a coffee plantation at Kyamenya village in Lugusuulu sub-county.

He said Rashid Nkuluyingoma would be charged with possession of illegal drugs with intent to supply. The suspect, Obella said, was reputed the key supplier of opium in the district.

Obella said Nkuluyingoma had dried some of the drug and kept it in a store next to his home. “We have most of it and we shall take it to court as exhibit,” Obella said.

Southern regional Police commander Andrew Sorowen said such operations would continue throughout the region.
“The man who hacked five people to death recently was under the influence of drugs,” Sorowen said.

He called upon Police commanders in Masaka, Kalangala, Rakai and Sembabule districts to look for such gardens.

“They are normally hidden in the middle of ranches, big coffee plantations and maize gardens,” he explained.

Sorowen advised those growing the drug to destroy it before the Police arrested them. Nkuluyingoma denied selling the opium for human consumption. He said the drug was meant for poultry farmers who used it to treat their chicken.
