Students want Makerere probed

OVER 164 Makerere University students yesterday petitioned Parliament to urgently probe the university over mismanagement.

The students, led by John Wekase, the president of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, dismissed claims that the university was under-funded, making it hard to run.

“We strongly believe that the problem at the university is poor management,” the petition stated. Handing over the petition to Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi, the students cited duplication of academic programmes as one of the major problems the university faces.

Because of this, they argued, tuition fees had been increased to cater for more teaching staff, a burden that “trickles down to the poor students.”
