POLICE are holding a suspect arrested in an operation over the weekend to crackdown on the illegal trafficking of ivory, a top Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) official has said.

“This indicates that illegal activities are going on,” said Sam Mwandha, UWA’s conservation director. “It gives us a wake-up call to prevent poaching.”

Mwandha, however, declined to name the suspect, saying it would undermine efforts to fight trafficking. He said the ivory weighing about 30 kilogrammes was seized in Kampala, Kihihi and Gulu
