UGANDA is in the weaker of two CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup groups but will still have to beat soccer rivals Rwanda and Tanzania if they are to advance to the semi-finals.

Group B will provide a close contest for the two semi-final places, with defending champions Sudan, Kenya and Burundi expected to produce a thrilling battle.

The group will have most of its matches played at the newly refurbished Bugembe stadium that was approved yesterday.

CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye presided over the draws yesterday that produced interesting fixtures for Uganda.

Uganda was eliminated by Tanzania in the Africa Championships, while Rwanda beat them at Namboole to deny them a chance to make it to the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. Uganda will seek a tenth regional title, their first since 2003.

Pay television GTV is paying for air tickets, accommodation and prize money for all the ten East and Central Africa teams. However, the local organising committee is still looking for over sh53m to cater for other expenses.

“We have put in our request to different companies to give us a hand. We want the event to be the best ever,” said Jowali Kyeyago, the local organising committee head.

Just a few years ago, the gulf in financial resources often conspired to shape the domestic league into a customary three-horse race between SC Villa, Express FC and KCC FC.

The $5m (sh8.35bn) GTV has poured into the league has changed all that and a desirable six-team race for this season’s championship, reports Fred Kaweesi.

The destiny of the title already appears extremely unpredictable as just four points separate sixth-placed URA FC from table leaders Simba (35 points).

The army side, who engage Iganga, have acquired some sort of poise this season under coach Sam Ssimbwa compared to their earlier chaotic seasons. “There is belief through the team that we are good enough to be where we are. There is absolutely no pressure for us,” Ssimbwa stated.

Under normal circumstances, URA FC’s visit to Express FC would have been the outstanding game of the eight fixtures but for the Red Eagles’ recent poor run.
