Practical learning is one of the major ways of helping a child to understand quickly, both in class and outside.

As part of helping pupils to understand what they are taught in class and put them in practice, Namugongo Girls’ Boarding Primary School held an art exhibition recently.

The theme of the day was: Surrounding us. The pupils showed their parents and guests what they made from art and craft, tye and dye. They showcased modelling clothes, pottery, weaving and knitting.

The school’s headmistress, Agnes Nakabugo said the school organised the exhibition to show parents what children learnt in classes. “This art exhibition helps pupils to improve on their talents and to be self reliant in future,” she said.

She further said that the exhibition teaches pupils about families, schools and the surroundings. Nakabugo said the school has also twinned up with Bure-park Primary School in United Kingdom.

OxfordShire County Council Schools advisor, Chris Scrivener said pupils of Bure-park exchange art and crafts work and write letters to friends in Uganda.

Aber Catherine, P.6, assistant head girl, said they have learned more, especially in weaving table mats and cloth. She said teachers guided them on how to start.

“Our teachers gave us practical skills like weaving, knitting, pottery, tye and dye,” she said.

Kabirigi Oliver, P.6, said she learnt more, especially in designing clothes for modelling and evening wear. “I had no idea on how to make designs for evening clothes, but now I could make clothes and sell them to guests and parents,” she said.

Esther Auma, P.3B, said she learnt how to make labels and put them on Christmas and success cards. “We make labels, Christmas and success cards for parents and pupils. We sell some of them to our parents and guests during visiting days,” she said.

Evelyn Amek, P.5, said she learnt making pots from the clay after her teachers introduced the project in the class.

“I could make any design of pot from the clay. I got the practical skills from my teachers who have taught us how to make pots from the clay,” she said.
