STANBIC Bank robbery suspect Justus Kashoma was yesterday granted bail by the High Court under stringent conditions.

He was, however, returned to Luzira Prison after he failed to fulfill the conditions.

Kashoma was barred from accessing any of the Stanbic Bank branches, especially the one at Garden City.

He was ordered not to communicate with the bank officials.

The State had earlier opposed Kashoma’s bail application, saying he would interfere with investigations.

Kashoma was ordered to pay sh5m in cash, a non-cash bond of sh100m and deposit his passport with the High Court.

He was also asked to deposit a land title of not less than sh250m in his names or that of his spouse.

Court, however, ordered that the land be valued first.

It also ordered that in the event that the land title is not in Kashoma’s names, he should secure a certificate of title with powers of attorney approved by at least a judge of the criminal division of the High Court.

Justice Benjamin Kabiito rejected Kashoma’s two sureties, whom he said were not substantial.

He advised Kashoma to get three other sureties, whom he said should be approved by a judge of the criminal division of the court in the presence of a representative of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The sureties, the judge said, would have to bond sh50m each.

Kashoma was asked to report to the criminal registry of the court every first Monday of each month.

He was also asked to appear before the Chief Magistrates’ Court at Buganda Road with effect from December 12.

Kashoma was sent on remand at Luzira Prison on September 25.

He and five other suspects were charged with aggravated robbery and theft of sh10m from Stanbic Bank.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of death on conviction.
