Musician Mesach Ssemakula has appealed to parents and teachers to support children with musical talent. Ssemakula was speaking at the cultural day of St. Catherine Primary School, Kawanda.

“Parents tend to stop their children from engaging in music,” he said. “This is very bad because music, as we have discovered, can be a rewarding job,” he said.

“Many years ago, whenever a child showed a liking for music, his parents would beat him up.”

Ssemakula, who is also the Buganda commissioner in charge of music, asked parents to help their children embrace their culture.

“I sang “Nyimbire Omutanda” because I realised that many children knew nothing about their culture. Parents must be the first people to educate children about culture,” he said.

The function was also graced by award-winning musicians; Mowzey Radio and Weasel of the Good Life Crew. Mowzey Radio, in a brief speech, thanked parents for educating their children.

The director of the school, Lawrence Bomboka, said the main reason why the school held a cultural day is to instill cultural values among the children.

“As you have seen here, children have showcased their cultures and also got an opportunity to learn about the cultures of other people,” Bomboka said.

In their performances, the children sang the school’s original compositions and mimed several others.

Ssemakula offered to record two of the school’s original compositions in his studio.
