KAMPALA city council needs sh2 trillion to improve the city’s infrastructure, the mayor, Nasser Sebaggala, has said.

“We need about sh200b a year over the next 10 years to get first class infrastructure. But where can we get this money?” he asked.

Works minister John Nasasira has in the past attacked Sebaggala over the bad state of the city roads.

Sebaggala said the Government had budgeted sh15b for road repairs, but only sh13.5b was released.

“Most roads were built with a 10 to 15-year lifespan. The last reconstruction was done in 1990. This is 2008,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.

KCC’s budget for the 2008/09 financial year is sh52b, he said.

“Jerusalem (Israel capital) is a quarter of Kampala in size and population, but runs an annual budget of $4.b (about sh7.6 trillion),” he added.

Sebaggala, however, hailed the Government for facilitating KCC and urged it not to shy away from transforming Kampala into an international city.

“We need to invest more in roads if we are to boost tourism, the hotel sector and encourage private investors,” he said.
