SIR — I read with great interest the letter by Liliane Frances on november 4, 2006 about Dr. Okullu’s manual on AIDS and another one by Finuela Martinez entitled “I want to help him”.

I got a copy of Dr. Andrew Okullu Akena’s book.

The manual is a marvellous piece and achievement by an African medical researcher and a Ugandan in particular.

Okullu unravels some of the most debated mysteries on AIDS in an African medical perspective which I believe is a milestone regarding a final cure to the illusive pandemic.

It contains a full colour pictorial of some of the most previously unthought of complications caused by the disease.

To me, the letters by Frances and Martinez are just another way of how for long African medical researchers have been cheated and had their work pirated by the west.

I believe it is high time Africans found ways to fund their own scientists who are very capable of finding a cure for AIDS which has devastated the continent.

I believe Uganda is committed to fighting AIDS and Dr. Okullu should ask for assistance through Uganda’s health ministry like most of us have done. Otherwise congratulations Dr. Okullu.
