Would you choose to have a baby without sex?

RECENTLY, The New Vision published a story ‘You can conceive without sex’, which caused a lot of uproar. The story was about a research on procedures, especially for discordant couples, to conceive a baby without sexual intercourse and minimum risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Some people think it is morally, culturally and religiously wrong, while others think it is fine. Irene Nabusoba combed the streets for people’s opinions.

There is no way I can have a child that is not a result of sex. I have to eat the forbidden fruit, even if I am HIV-positive. The programme, Prevention of Mother- to-Child transmission, can ensure that our baby is safe. If she fears the risk, out of respect, I would grant her the wish, but only as a last resort.

Grace Mubiru

I cannot do it. I find it too foreign. Once people learn that the ‘child was washed’, it will never fit in. Culturally, society would alienate the child. Even I would alienate myself from the child. The procedure may help address some fears as far as HIV/AIDS is concerned but it has far reaching social implications. A baby should be a fruit of sex.

Esther Akello

I can do it if I love the person, want to have a child with him, and if I am afraid of contracting HIV/AIDS. Getting a child that way would be fascinating. It is out of real love, sacrifice and great risk. I would consequently adore him for caring about my life. I would also cherish my baby so much.

Sande Gabriel

I would not feel like I own the child. It is like adopting. I can only do it if the woman has totally refused, but even then, I know I can always find another woman.

Esther Asiimwe

I would rather adopt than go for a sperm. It’s not natural. What do I tell my child? At least for adoption, I will have answers.

Sam Magara

I find a baby conceived without sex so artificial. Would I really own that baby? I would fear that it would have some abnormalities in future because of the sperm washing.
