Here are our joys and pains of 2006

Jan 05, 2007

AS children waved off 2006 and welcomed 2007, many were excited about the good things that had happened to them and at the same time saddened by some things they faced. Some children talked to Christine Kintu about their experiences in 2006 and the lessons they learnt

ANITA BYARUHANGA, Lohana Academy
Joys: I was one of the best dancers in my class and I was chosen for a trip to Germany. I made so many friends.
Lesson: Germans are very clean. There are rubbish bins all over and you can never see rubbish thrown anywhere. Germans are also kind people.
Worst: I lost an uncle.
Lesson: I learnt to be more loving and to do the right thing at the right time because no one will live forever.

EVELYN NAKAWOYA, 11, Nakasero P/S
Joys: The day I was the first in class. I was so happy to deliver the report to my parents.
Lesson: If you work hard, you can perform well.
Worst: The day I got aggregate eight.
Lesson: I have to work harder because such an aggregate will not take me to the schools I want, that is Kings College Budo or Gayaza High School.

ASANASIO OKWI, 10, Nakasero P/S
Joys: Reading Children’s Vision and the Young Talk in Straight Talk.
Lessons: I have learnt to do the puzzles in newspapers. I have also learnt about AIDS. From the papers I have learnt that I should eat fruits that keep me healthy and repair worn out tissues.
Worst: When I read in The New Vision about a girl who was allegedly burnt with paraffin by her stepmother.
Lesson: When my parent dies, I should go to responsible people like aunts or grandparents because they can take care of me.

ABRAHAM ASIIMIRWE, 12 years
Joys: During 2006, I did not go above the seventh position in class.
Lesson: I now have the faith that I will pass Primary Leaving Examinations this year.
Pain: When my cousin, who was 13 years old, died of malaria.
Lesson: I ask God to help me and keep me in all I do every morning and evening. I put my life in God’s hands.

JORDAN TUMWESIGYE, 11,
Buganda Road P/S

Joys: In July, I learnt how to use a computer. My mum also threw me a birthday party and for the first time I got a gift.
Lessons: My parents know what is best for me. God gave me parents who want me to study and become great in future. I thank God for that.
Worst: When my teacher beat me for something I did not do. A girl was applying cosmetics in class and when the teacher smelt it, she punished me instead.
Lesson: Do not trust anyone 100%. Caning can shape a bad child, but parents and teachers are not supposed to beat to kill.

ESTHER TINO, 10,
Buganda Road P/S

Joys: My greatest joy came when I got 100% in Social Studies and I was the best in class.
Lesson: One has to pay a lot of attention in class to perform well. Also, one should seek advice from parents, teachers and friends.
Worst: I was talking to a friend while in class and could not pay attention.
Lesson. When in class, pay attention and in examinations read and follow instructions.

JOAN NAKIMBUGWE, Lohana Academy
Joys: On December 2, 2006, we had a concert and my class was among the best.
Lesson: Dancing lessons have helped me become friendlier.
Pain: I fell and hurt my leg as I was rushing to class and I missed the class teacher’s early morning explanations.
Lesson: I have learnt to be on time.

JOY NAKATO, 9,
Lohana Academy

Joys: When I got a
scholarship.
Lesson: I learnt that when you ask God for wisdom, work hard and are attentive and obedient in class, you score good grades.
Worst: When we went to the beach for lunch and I misplaced my aunt’s phone.
Lesson: To be more careful when handling other people’s property. My dad also told me not to handle other people’s things if I am not going to do it carefully.

REBBECCA ATAMBA, 10, Nakasero P/S
Joys: The day I spoke over the radio about AIDS.
I spoke about, how I learnt about AIDS, how people get AIDS ands how people should treat those with AIDS.
Lesson: People living with AIDS victims should be loved. I also learnt that there are many people with AIDS and that is why there is World AIDS day.
Worst: When I fell sick and could not go to school. I love school because that is where most of my friends are.
Lesson: Teachers love children.

DENIS SEKAMATTE, 11, Nakasero P/S
Joy: I completed my Holy Communion classes on November 12.
Lessons: From the confirmation class, I learnt how to be a nice person. We also had a conference in 2006 on essay writing about corruption and mine was among the best.
Lesson: From the competition, I learnt that hard work pays.
Worst: The day I was at school and did not have enough strength and I had to walk back home slowly.
Lesson: My mother taught me “time is money” and it is true. Some people who get to office late are always warned and if they make it a habit they are fired and then they lose their source of money, so time is money.

VIVIAN KATENDE, 11,
Buganda Road P/S

Joys: I got several gifts from my parents like clothes and shoes on my birthday in August.
Lesson: Your parents giving you gifts show that they love you.
Worst: My mum had always warned me never to murmur after being given advice by my elders. One day, I murmured after she had finished speaking to me and she caned me.
Lesson: Do not murmur after being given advice.
