YOU ASK US

Dear aunt,
a married woman in my neighbourhood is giving me headache. Although she lives with her husband, she keeps following me up, asking me to love her. I am not interested in a relationship with her because I fear the consequences in case the husband finds out. Worse still, she threatens to bewitch me if I refuse to give in to her love demands. I am worried.

Dear Anthony,
Your problem must be quite challenging given the threats involved. How often do you see each other and under which circumstances?

Frequent close encounters with the opposite sex increase the chances of attraction.

You are right to fear the consequences, but there is more to it than just the husband’s wrath.
A relationship of this nature would expose you to the risks of contracting HIV. Furthermore, love is a feeling that comes naturally and not through threats.

Threatening you might mean she does not love you, but is out to exploit you for her own sexual gain. Have you discussed this issue with her?

Since threats are involved, you may need to involve a third party, who is close to you. Have you ever shared this information with anybody? A face-to-face talk with a professional counsellor would help you learn better coping skills.
