About 200 community groups in Pader IDP camps have received a boost from CARE international, writes Chris Ocowun.

The donation included 160 oxen with ox-ploughs, modern beehives and bicycles.

Several women groups were also given 130 cash boxes for saving money as a way of encouraging community savings and credit schemes in the rural areas.

CARE programme manager in Pader Pius Ongom Okello identified the beneficiary camps as Patongo, Acholibur, Lira-Palwo and Puranga.

The donations were handed over to 20 sample community groups at Patongo IDP camp in Agago county on Wednesday by Pader district chairman Peter Odok W’Oceng.

Present were the programme director Shameen Siddiqi, the emergency and rehabilitation sector manager, Edward Sembide and the northern Uganda team leader, Phillips Okin.

Ongom stated that the beehives would help in setting up demonstration apiaries in the various sub-counties to train farmers in modern methods of bee farming and honey processing.

The community groups were warned against using the oxen and other donations for paying dowry.

Siddiqi said CARE would work with district leaders to fight poverty, hunger and illiteracy.

Odok hailed CARE for extending its services to the district and urged the community to unite and fight poverty.
