GENERAL David Tinyefuza, Senior Presidential Adviser on defence and coordinator of the security services, is taking The Daily Monitor to court over allegations that he was involved in the murder of Dr. Andrew Kayiira in 1987.

“Our client categorically denies all that has been published against him in the said newspaper as being malicious, malevolent and spiteful,” the complaint by the Kampala Associated Advocates reads in part.

“The publications are a mere fabrication intended to portray him as an assassin, killer, murderer and wicked author of Dr. Kayiira’s murder and hence unfit to hold the position he holds as a senior officer in the UPDF.”

The lawyers in particular complain about the story purportedly told by a one Cpl. Eddy Sande that appeared in the Sunday Monitor of January 14, 2007.

The lawyers claim the publications have damaged Tinyefuza’s reputation. They also accuse the newspaper of not having cross-checked the information and pursuing a political agenda.

“Throughout its publications the Monitor newspaper has not bothered to crosscheck with our client to establish the validity, if any, of the said allegations.

Newspapers have a moral and professional duty to report the truth and not to pursue hidden political vendettas and agendas.”

Three more UPDF officers are filing separate suits against the newspaper over the Kayiira saga. They are Brig. Kasirye Gwanga, Brig. Peter Kerim and Lt. Col. David Kaboyo.
