THE internally displaced people who are returning to their villages in the north have reason to smile. The Government has started delivering their resettlement packages.

The minister for Relief, Refugee and Disaster Preparedness, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, on Wednesday handed over the resettlement kits to Gulu district LC5 chief Norbert Mao and the chief administrative officer, Patrick Otto Langoya.

The package, which cost sh18b, comprised 32 tonnes of beans, 32 tonnes of maize, 32 tonnes of sorghum, 24 tonnes of millet and 23 tonnes of groundnut seeds.

The displaced people will also receive 29,000 hoes, 6,920 pangas, 6,920 axes and 6,920 sickles.

The minister told Mao and Langoya to ensure that the donation is immediately distributed to the beneficiaries to start tilling their land.

He disclosed that the other districts in Teso, Lango and Acholi regions would soon receive consignments of seeds and farm implements.

Kabwegyere asserted that Pader district would receive 48 tonnes of beans, 48 tonnes of maize and another 48 tonnes of sorghum seeds.

The internally displaced people in the district will also receive 38 tonnes of millet and 27 tonnes of groundnuts seeds.

Those in Kitgum district will get 40 tonnes of beans, 40 of maize and another 40 of sorghum seeds. The minister explained: “I have written to all the humanitarian agencies to state clearly what contributions they are making towards resettling our people.

“We want to minimise hand-outs of food and other relief items by the end of this year to people in the camps.”
